Dylan and I met ten years ago through our younger sisters who are best friends. Dylan Facebook messaged me and we started dating around the age of 13, but I ended it a few months later because I thought we were too young. At 16 I moved in with his family so I could be closer to work as I worked with Dylan’s mum and grandmother. Throughout the years he stayed my best friend. When I was 18 I started dating a guy who I ended up pregnant with Beau and it didn’t work out, so I moved home with my family. As soon as I moved home, Dylan and his family were back in my life and treated me like they always have. Beau adored Dylan and Dylan loved Beau. I was stoked I had my best friend back!
A few months went by and Dylan and I were spending most weekends with each other. My Nana was visiting from Tauranga at one point and she just straight out said “for goodness sake, you two are like an old married couple would you just get together already!” - That was our light bulb moment! Dylan then told me he had always loved me and he wanted to date me but also he wanted to be a role model for Beau. Six weeks later we were engaged and six months later we got married.
Dylan has literally been my knight in shining armour and supports me in all aspects of my life. I have never felt so loved or important. Our story isn’t perfect but neither of us would change a thing. We both are besotted and adore Beau and our wee family. We finally got our happily ever after!
The proposal happened at the top of the port hills. Dylan had packed a picnic with cheese, crackers, chocolate ,champagne and candles. He had arranged to have my Aunty make me a ring, so he proposed with a crystal box filled with rose petals and chocolates and a giant red heart ornament saying “will you marry me”. After I said yes he gave me a giant bouquet of flowers. It was amazing!
I loved the planning process to start with but then because I’m super impatient I hated the waiting! The most difficult thing was juggling planning our wedding with my very active toddler and I have to give a lot of credit to my mum. She was amazing throughout the process and she went over and above in every aspect! For us the most important thing was to really treasure the moment. It was our day and we were in our own bubble. We wanted only people who have loved and supported both of us there and it was very important for us to have all our little cousins there - Having no kids at the wedding was never going to happen!
I wasn’t nervous at all on the day neither was Dylan. We were both just super excited and relieved we no longer had to wait! I mean why would I be nervous - I was literally marrying my best friend and the best father Beau could dream of having! I’m not ever emotional but I cried so much on the day, just being surrounded by everyone who loves us and has supported us. Knowing everything had worked out for me and Beau after going through the horrible times I’d had, I felt so overwhelmed with joy and love. I had the mentality that it didn’t matter if anything went wrong, what will be will be and I’m going to enjoy every minute because I knew it would fly by, and that is what made us both absolutely love our day!
Having close friends and family involved in our wedding made the day a lot more meaningful. We used my Grandma's china to serve our high tea deserts on. It was sad for me not having her there as she passed away when I was younger but it was important for me to include her in my day. Also, my Aunty Isabell made my engagement ring and both our wedding bands which are incredible and makes them even more special, and a very close family friend Steph made all of our wedding favours and our amazing wedding cake.
I loved everything about my wedding! It was our new chapter and it symbolised everything that was important to us and our families and friends. The only hiccup we had was during the photos Dylan got really sick and was vomiting so much! He’d been unwell the week leading up to the wedding but add the excitement and nerves and he couldn’t hold back! Thankfully after my dad raced home and got some anti nausea pills he was okay.
My top piece of advice would be to not be talked into doing anything you don’t want to do. You only get one wedding and it’s your day - I wanted all 11 of my little cousins as flower girls and everyone thought I was bonkers but I’m so pleased I stood my ground because it made my day so special and the were all amazing! Stop and enjoy every minute because it feels like you blink and it’s all over so don’t stress and want perfection - Just relax and really enjoy it!

Desserts | Red Eight Cafe in Kaiapoi has been my favourite cafe since having my son. I love the staff and the food is always amazing, so when I got engaged I knew I wanted then to put together a high tea desert and they exceeded my expectations.
